Art, Choir, Drama hit the Big Apple
Upper School art, choir, and drama students enjoyed a break from classes as they travelled to New York City for a fine arts trip and were sure to catch all of the NYC staples: the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Central Park, and Times Square. The trip culminated in the choir students performing in the venerable Carnegie Hall under the direction of conductor, Dr. Anton Armstrong, choral director of the St. Olaf Choir.
Upon arriving in New York, the students embarked on a bus ride through Harlem, ate lunch on the upper west side, and did some shopping on the lower east side. The first evening featured a night tour of Top of the Rock located in Rockefeller Center.
Friday and Saturday included rehearsals for the choir students, while drama students took acting workshops at Shelter Acting Studios, and art students visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art and MOMA. All students had the opportunity to enjoy two musicals of their choice: Les Miserables, Fiddler on the Roof, Aladdin, or Wicked.
Students attended Hillsong Church NYC on Sunday morning, followed by a tour of Radio City Music Hall which included a private meeting with one of the Rockettes.
While the trip was certainly recreational, it was a meaningful experience for the students. Senior art student, Austin Duncan, notes, "I've always wanted to visit New York. I plan on studying architecture in college, so it was enlightening to see all of the buildings and the art the city had to offer."
Mrs. Amanda Solomon, Legacy's drama teacher, was impressed by her students on the trip. "The daily acting workshops benefited everyone greatly. Watching the kids branch out of their comfort zones as they stepped on stage with absolutely zero scripts or preparation and perform for an audience Improv style was something to be applauded."
Legacy Christian Academy offers students a college preparatory education; central to that education is fine arts. 100% of students in pre-K through grade 10 participate in a fine arts course, and many upper classmen continue with their fine art study. To learn about Legacy, visit legacyca.com/apply
