We are pleased to introduce Scott Smith as our new head varsity football coach. Scott has a distinguished 35-year career as a successful high school and collegiate football coach serving as head coach at Highland Park, Odessa Permian, Rockwall, Duncanville, and Garland High Schools. He has also served as an assistant coach at Baylor University, the University of Arkansas, the University of North Texas, SMU, and Howard Payne University. Scott has served the last five years as the Associate Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator at Houston Baptist University where he helped establish the football program from scratch in 2013.

Scott is a graduate of Highland Park High School and Baylor University where he was a four-year letterman as quarterback and defensive back for the Bears. He has won numerous coach-of-the-year awards and has led four different high school teams to 18 playoff games in 17 years as a head coach.

Coach Vic Shealy, Head Football Coach at Houston Baptist University, describes Scott as a “phenomenal coach and man who is the same person during the week as he is on Sunday.” According to Coach Shealy, Scott is passionate about football, creating excitement and “bringing more energy to the field than most 30 year-olds.”

Head of School, Bill McGee, describes Scott as a consummate educator and football coach who views his profession as an opportunity to mentor and influence young people, helping them to be all that God creates them to be.

I have known Scott Smith for over 30 years, going back to the early 1980's when we were both young assistant coaches in Texas. His experience and record speak for themselves, but I am more impressed with his Christian witness than his skills as a football coach. He will be a great role model and leader for not only our football players, but for the entire student body.”
–Bill McGee, Head of School

We are blessed to have a man of Coach Smith's integrity, passion and experience leading our football program. As the new head football coach at LCA, Scott's infectious love for the Lord, eternal perspective on coaching, and commitment to excellence both on and off the field will bear fruit in the hearts and lives of our young men. I am confident he will make an immediate impact on our entire campus for the glory of God!”
–Kevin Mosley, Upper School Principal

We are excited to welcome Coach Smith to Legacy. Scott's desire to serve the Lord and use football in the development of young men will reap benefits for the whole Legacy community.”
–Cole Johnson, Director of Athletics

Scott is married to the former Kelly Hudspeth, the daughter of Texas coaching legend, Tommy Hudspeth, and a former cheerleader at Sherman High School and Baylor University. Scott and Kelly have two grown sons, Shea and Braden, who also coach high school football in Texas. They have two grandchildren and one on the way.

When asked to comment about his appointment, Coach Smith said this:

I am excited and humbled to accept the position of Head Football Coach at Legacy Christian Academy. I desire for the football program to represent the school's mission, core values, and statement of faith in all that we do.

We will:

  • WORK HARD
  • IMPROVE EVERY DAY
  • BE UNSELFISH
  • BE THE BEST

Members of our football team will always be good role models according to 2 Timothy 1:7: “For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.” May our passion, enthusiasm, and athletic ability always be used for HIS GLORY.”

Scott will assume the helm of our football program immediately and will meet with players, parents, and assistant coaches as his first order of business.
