Excellence is a Habit, Not an Act!

“We challenge students with this motto each school year. I want to teach our young musicians lifelong habits, and this statement is central to our philosophy” shared Andy Murphy, Director of Bands at Legacy Christian Academy. It's a philosophy that has worked well for Murphy and Assistant Director, Andi Webb. The Screamin' Eagle Marching Band is the reigning back-to-back-to-back TPSMEA State Marching Band Champions.

We interviewed senior Drum Majors, Sarah Martinez & Ross Widner, as they were preparing for a title-defense marching rehearsal:

What is the role of drum major?

Sarah: Our primary role is serve our directors and bandmates. We have to set the bar high; our example establishes the tempo literally and figuratively. Behind the scenes, it is our job to help get things ready for the next rehearsal.

What is the greatest challenge for the marching band this year?

Ross: For the first time the underclassmen outnumber the upperclassmen. We are excited about what this means for the future of the program, but this year it means we have to reduce the learning curve, starting from the ground up by taking time to teach them how to march and play correctly.

What can you tell us about this year's show?

Ross: This year's show is based on the Pirates of the Caribbean, and it incorporates music from the movies, as well as well known Pirate-y songs, like A Pirates Life For Me.

Sarah: It's a fun show that includes great music, as well acting and role-playing. Spoiler alert: Sword fighting!

How has marching band grown you?

Sarah: Marching band has helped me to channel my “inner leader”. It has helped me to know when I need to step up and help others, and it has taught me that I am there to serve, help, and teach others.

Ross: This year, as a result of being drum major, I have been challenged as a leader. I've had to learn to teach and correct mistakes in a way that isn't harsh or demeaning.
