LCA Juniors & Seniors Excel at ACT

According to ACT, producers of the college admissions and placement test taken by more than 1.8 million high school graduates annually, Legacy seniors outrank the national average by 53% when it comes to college readiness and on average every Junior already demonstrates readiness.

The Benchmarks are scores on the ACT subject-area tests that represent the level of achievement required for students to have a 50% chance of obtaining a B or higher or about a 75% chance of obtaining a C or higher in corresponding credit-bearing first-year college courses. These college courses include English composition, college algebra, introductory social science courses, and biology. Based on a sample of 214 institutions and more than 230,000 students from across the United States, the Benchmarks are median course placement values for these institutions and as such represent a typical set of expectations.

“What this data reveals is that our students are prepared for college, not just when they leave, but now,” said Dr. Chris Harmon, Legacy Head of School. “Despite taking the exam only 8 weeks into their junior year, on average, 100% of our juniors exceeded each of the minimum benchmark standards. Furthermore, our seniors out performed the national average three times over!”

“This year, as a result of some changes with ACT, we were able to offer our juniors the opportunity to take ACT on campus in October. We were thrilled with such positive results so early in the school year, and, while we highly recommend that each junior take the exam again, the scoring information will be beneficial when I meet with each family beginning in January to formulate a college admissions plan,” said Daniel Townsley, Director of College Advising and former National Counselor of the Year.

In 8th Grade, Legacy students first encounter ACT, when they take the EXPLORER test. “The EXPLORER is like a pre-pre-ACT test,” shared Angela Paxton, Guidance Counselor. “While it is certainly not something we teach to, it does allow us to begin identifying where our students strengths lie in terms of college readiness.” Students continue with the PLAN in 9th and 10th grade, before taking the ACT in 11th Grade.
