Legacy's Lady Eagles varsity golf team, under the guidance of 7-year golf coach, Darcy Boyd, wrapped up the 2016 season by winning the TAPPS 4A State Golf Championship, held Monday and Tuesday at the Wildflower Country Club in Temple, TX. With cold, wet, and rainy conditions on Monday, LCA still managed to finish with a 31-stroke lead going into Tuesday's final round. LCA completely dominated the field of 8 teams and 48 players from all over Texas, finishing with a total score of 682, which was 84 strokes ahead of second place finisher, Fort Worth Christian School (766).

Grateful for the opportunity to play golf for LCA, the Lady Eagles have become accustomed to flexing their golf muscles over the rest of the field since the state championships starting coming Legacy's way back in 2014. The 2014 team with then freshman, McKenzie Cady, and sophomores, Lauren Pettijohn and Lacy Sheldon, leading the way (along with now alumni, Stephanie Lewis, Grace McCullough, and Maggie McCullough), won its first ever state championship besting the nearest competitor by 119 strokes. Despite transitioning to the larger 4A classification the following year, the 2015 team with then freshman, Grace Pettijohn, sophomore, McKenzie Cady, and juniors, Lauren Pettijohn and Lacy Sheldon, never missed a step in bringing home a second state championship victory by 90 strokes. This year's 2016 team, with all returning players, continued the tradition of athletic excellence through strength and honor with a tremendous two-day championship performance.

Coaches and parents of the other teams competing at the state championship this year shared with golf coach, Darcy Boyd, how impressive LCA's girls have been both on and off the course over the years. Many shared with Coach Boyd how knowledgeable the Legacy girls are of the golf rules, proper golf etiquette, and the incredible sportsmanship each girl demonstrates towards the other competitors. Although many expressed being intimidated by the LCA team due to their incredible golfing talents, many of those same players expressed their desire to play with the LCA girls because of their fairness, integrity, and commitment to protecting the field of players in holding themselves, as well as others accountable, to playing by the rules.

And this year, the Lady Eagles varsity golf team achieved another milestone for its record books. Sophomore, Grace Pettijohn, became the first LCA golfer in the history of the school to be crowned individual state champion! Grace carded a 78-79 (157) to win by 3 strokes ahead of challenger Kristina Gutierrez of Laredo's St. Augustine Catholic High School. Rounding out the top 10 were seniors, Lacy Sheldon (5th place, 2016 District Champion) and Lauren Pettijohn (8th place, Regional Champion).
