Meal-Time Monday with the Gross Family

We visited with the Gross family when it was still 100 outside, but their Four-Bean Chili recipe is perfect for our first fall Meal-Time Monday post! On the value of a family meal, Mrs. Gross wisely shared, “Family mealtime is an opportunity to not only nourish our children's bodies, but their minds and hearts also. Time at the family table gives opportunities to learn courtesy, table etiquette, and casual conversation skills. Mealtime provides a sense of belonging, usefulness, and a good laugh! ”

When asked about special traditions or rules at the dinner table, she added, “Our table is a cell phone and toy free zone, which helps keep our focus on each other. Learning to have joy in others' successes begins to come naturally while listening to each other talk about their day. For us, meal time is less about correction and doled out advice, but more of a relaxed time for the building up of each other.”

Like many families interviewed, the Gross family believes is in spreading the love when it comes to meal responsibility, “I have seen a spirit of helpfulness and teamwork cultivated by including my children in the preparation of the side dishes or a salad. Each of my children have a serving job at the table, whether it be the ‘vegetable lady' or the ‘bread man.'

As Gigi shared, “Family meals are the one thing that we can do to fill their bellies and their hearts at the same time. Great memories are made around the table, ones to which they will always want to return,” and this simple and easy chili recipe will ensure you have ensure you have plenty of time for memory-making.
