Senior Legal Counsel with Liberty Institute, Michael Berry, spoke to Intermediate School students about religious liberties in the United States during chapel last week.

Berry engaged the students with a brief history lesson about the religious founding of our nation and the value our Founding Fathers placed on the Bible as a central component in any education.

While Berry works with any cases regarding the protection of religious liberties, in order to reach our students on matters relevant to them, he focused the remainder of his time on recent cases involving the educational system.

I think it's truly beneficial to our nation to have people like Mr. Berry who stand up and defend our religious liberty.8th Grader, Clay Blanscet

He quizzed the students about the religious freedoms that are granted and guaranteed in the First Amendment and how those play out in daily life. The murmuring amidst the students indicated that many were surprised to hear that they did in fact have a wider berth of freedoms than they previously thought.

We are truly grateful for the work of the Liberty Institute and Mr. Berry. If we do not protect [religious liberty], we will lose it.LCA Guidance Counselor, Angela Paxton

Mr. Berry's passion was evident in everything he did and said. He shared, “As a marine, I swore an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States. In my view, I'm still doing the same thing, just from a different perspective.” Following chapel, many students waited to shake Mr. Berry's hand and thank him for his service to our country and continued dedication to preserving the freedoms for which he fought.

I'm thankful that I don't have to worry about what I can and can't say or do at school. It's a blessing to have our spiritual needs addressed and met in a school like Legacy. 7th Grader, Grace Chandler
