Thanksgiving Break is nearly here and our fall sports have officially come to an end. All the teams fought hard and are already preparing for next year. We hope you enjoy these season wrap-ups.
Football
It is no secret this year has been another tough year for Legacy football. What people don't see is the heart of the young men on the practice field in August, in the locker room after a difficult loss, or on the training table being evaluated by a physician. Football is a tough sport for tough minded people. You can't fake toughness and GUTS. Those words are not cliche or “coach talk.” They are real, they are true, and they are much needed in society today. We have had many great discussions as a team this year. We know this season has been a little about football and a lot about life.
Sophomore Ben Hamilton reflected, “If we allow these difficult times to teach us, we will be better. This year was a success.”
Like Ben said, this season has been a learning experience and because of that this team is still successful. This season has also taught to push through on and off the field.
“We know what people are saying. We hear what is said in the hallways, and at lunch, and on social media. You have to tune it out and keep working” says Conner Griffith. Such is life… Press up the positive and push down the negative. Success is earned in effort, your intentions, and your attitude. Legacy football will succeed.
Cross Country
The Legacy Cross Country team finished their season with excellence and honor on Monday at the TAAPS State Championships in Waco. After all the 6am sprints up the Stonebrook hill and 5-mile treks through the neighborhood, the hard work paid off. Coach Lane and Coach Heaton couldn't be more proud of their crew and are already looking forward to next year.
Several young men fought through sickness and injuries, but couldn't be stopped on the hilly, 3-mile course. Tyler Heaton led the gentlemen and achieved a personal record in the process. Maximal efforts from Max Sanderlin, David May, Brandon Duhaime, and Maxwell Napier were full of courage and pride.
The ladies worked equally as hard and burned through their 2-mile race. Morghan Dunlap led the charge, followed by Autum Merkow, Halle Hinton and Bryn Taunton. Each was an example of grit and determination.
Junior Brynn Taunton's advice and lesson from this season is to “Always push through, because when you work hard, the end result is always rewarding.”
Volleyball
2017 Volleyball Season was one for the record books. JV went 22-0. Undefeated. They were down in two games, 2-11 and 4-16, and came back and won. They are a strong team that mentally never got rattled, strong in spirit and in mind. Way to go JV!!
Varsity went 20-9-2 this year.
They had great showing in all three tournaments in which theycompeted. Twice they walked away with hardware, emerging as bracket champions in two of their three tournaments! They also finished 2nd in district and placed five players on 1st Team All District, Morgan McGlasson, Hannah Hamilton, Abbi Marsh, Kailey Luiken and Shye Manguray. Halee Biggs earned 2nd team All District and Mackenzie Hagermeier and Avery Benavides received honorable mention. Hamilton also received District Offensive Player of the Year, and Morgan McGlasson received the District Defensive Player of the Year. Erin Eisenmann won the TJ Tomeny Fighting Heart Award for her amazing attitude on and off the court, always managing to keep practices tough and the gym alive with encouragement. Aunie Slyman was named the Most Improved Players, as she came in the youngest on the team but worked hard each practice and game to help the Lady Eagles notch wins.
We were excited when JV season was over and pulled up Freshman Jenna McGlasson and Sophomore Chloe Furtaw to help us in the post season. Overall a great season. Go Lady Eagles.
When asked about the most challenging game of the season, Junior Captain Abbie Marsh said, “Our Homecoming game against Dallas Christian. We had lots of ups and downs, but we were able to pull through and get the win.”
When asked what the most valuable lesson learned, she learned from volleyball, Marsh shared, “To enjoy the season while it lasts.”
