In this edition of my blog, I want to highlight several upcoming special events. First, Dr. Michael Lindsay, president of Gordon College, one of the premier Christian colleges in the nation, will be on campus to address our upper school students on the topic of how to make the right decision for college. His presentation is entitled “Advice from a Higher Education Insider.” In this interactive session, President Lindsay, who has served on admissions committees at Princeton, Oxford, Rice, and Gordon, will give practical advice for choosing a college as well as tips for receiving top financial aid offers at leading institutions. President Lindsay is a personal friend of mine and a great advocate for Christian education. He presented this program at my previous school and was praised for his sage advice. Parents, you are welcome to attend this 30-minute presentation in the LPAC beginning at 1:25 pm on Wednesday, January 31. Tap here to learn more about President Lindsay, and you can watch in interview with below Dr. Lindsay as he discusses his research around What Makes Leaders Tick?

Secondly, we will be observing November in February. Alan November, international leader in education technology and author of the best-selling books, Who Owns the Learning and Web Literacy for Educators, will be on our campus on the afternoon of February 6 to inform and challenge our teachers to properly and effectively use online resources to fully engage students in the learning process. This is an exclusive opportunity for our faculty and staff to learn from one of the most knowledgeable and respected leaders in the field of educational technology. Thank you for your flexibility in accepting this calendar change to accommodate this special professional development opportunity for our teachers. Thirdly, on February 8, Stacey Vanden Bosch, the co-founder of add.a.lingua, an educational resource that assists schools in establishing dual language programs, will be on campus to lead a discussion about the benefits of bi-lingual education. We are exploring the possibility of implementing an optional Spanish immersion program at Legacy in the near future. We will be hosting two meetings, 10:00 am and 7:00 pm on that day, and would encourage you to attend one of these dialogues if you've ever wondered whether or not bi-lingual education would benefit your child. Tap to learn more about add.a.lingua or watch the video below.

Finally, not a week goes by that teachers, counselors and administrators are not dealing with the spiritual and emotional consequences of technology/social media misuse and over-use on our students. As covenant partners, we want to keep you informed with the latest research and equip you with the tools you need to mitigate the harmful effects of technology and social media addiction. To that end, we have invited David Drake, a lifelong educator and Director of Activities and Technology for the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools, to present a special program entitled, “Parenting and the Issue of Technology” on March 5 at 7:00 pm in the LPAC. Our Chief Operations Officer, Adam Housley, recently sent me this link to this thought-provoking article that paints a disturbing picture of the threat of tech addiction on our children.

As you can see, we are constantly seeking programs that would add value to our students' learning, enhance our teachers' pedagogical skills, and assist our parents' efficacy. As a school that embraces the concept of “imago Dei,” we strive for excellence because we reflect and serve The Most Excellent God. Thank you for helping us in this excellent endeavor.
