As graduation grows near and the year begins to wind down, things are winding up for many of our Legacy Athletes. Legacy Christian Academy senior soccer captain, Gavin Burgess, signed his NCAA National Letter of Intent with Dallas Baptist University on March 28th. The signing took place at Legacy Christian Academy's Upper School in front of family, friends, coaches and classmates who have supported and encouraged him on his journey to play college soccer.

Gavin started playing soccer at the tender age of four. Despite having his dad, Jon, as coach, Gavin was initially more captivated by the flowers in the field and the snacks after the game than he was in the sport. While he may have initially started as one of the most disinterested kids on the field, his God-given talent and natural knack for the sport began to surface and he hasn't looked back.

Gavin's soccer career is both impressive and extensive. After playing with his dad, Gavin moved to Frisco Soccer Association, where he played for a few years until moving to FC Dallas Academy. His team with FC Dallas travelled around the United States and won many tournaments. As he continued to mature as a player, he was driven to push himself further in terms of the competitive field to which he was exposed. He also realized the value in working with coaches that would have the capacity to motivate and develop him outside of his comfort zone. Over the years he has played with ASG and Andromeda and he currently plays with Ayses Soccer Club.

Gavin excitedly jumped on board the Legacy soccer program at its inception two years ago. A true left-footed player, he is comfortable at most positions but dominates as center midfielder and forward, making him highly desirable to many college teams. He was 2nd Team All State and Academic All State in 2018 and was 1st Team All District in both 2017 and 2018. Additionally, Gavin was selected as team MVP and recognized as Legacy's Offensive Player of the Year.

“Gavin plays with the highest level of intensity and you can count on him to give you his best from the very start. It is this characteristic of Gavin's game that inspires his teammates to press on and give it their best as well.”
– Legacy Soccer Coach Rob Armstrong

Gavin's intuitiveness is further conveyed by his coach. “He understands the game and how best to maximize opportunities.” A leader on and off the field, he is a true team player and has unrivaled field vision, often passing and creating scoring opportunities for his teammates. These essential skills, paired with his athletic prowess, make Gavin an invaluable asset to any team. Athletic Director Cole Johnson had this to say at Cole's Letter of Intent signing:

“Gavin improves the value of every player on the field

when he is on the field with them.”

Gavin is a multifaceted, highly-skilled player whose talents reach far and wide. Not only a gifted soccer player, he also participated in golf, swimming, baseball and even kicked a 55-yard field goal this last football season. Gavin fielded offers from Arkansas to Iowa but chose to take his talents to DBU. He sees DBU as a natural complement and progression from Legacy and a place where he can grow and continue to challenge himself in a sport he loves.
