This past week, I had the privilege of welcoming veterans to our Lower School’s annual Veteran’s Day assembly. It was a powerful reminder of the service and sacrifice these men and women have offered for our freedom. As our students introduced each veteran by the branch of service they represented and shared a brief history of that division, I reflected on the connection between service, faithfulness, and the call we have as followers of Christ.
Veterans serve not for personal gain—the risks they take far outweigh any benefits they receive—but out of a deep commitment to something greater than themselves. Their stories reflect courage, sacrifice, and perseverance—values that beautifully align with what it means to live a life of faith. As we honored these heroes, I was reminded of Mark 10:45, where Jesus says, “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
In this verse, Jesus sets the ultimate example of service, rooted in God’s unwavering faithfulness. Just as God faithfully sent His Son to serve and save us, we are called to reflect His faithfulness by serving others. This isn’t always easy, but it is through acts of service—big or small—that we demonstrate the love of Christ to those around us.
At Legacy, we encourage our students to live out this truth. Whether it’s through off-campus projects like those in our House system, Lead Legacy, and Freshman Forum, or our Journey program, which helps meet physical and spiritual needs around the world, service is central to who we are. On campus, our students serve on Safety Patrol, chapel leadership, mentor programs, make blankets for children in foster care, assemble snack packs for underprivileged students in our community, and translate letters for mission organizations through our Spanish Immersion program. Students even spend a day helping our janitors by doing “Operation Clean School”! Service is in the heartbeat and DNA of what it means to be part of LCA.
God’s faithfulness fuels our ability to serve because we know He is always with us. Whether in the sacrifice of our veterans or the everyday acts of kindness we extend to others, we are part of something greater. As parents, I encourage you not to rely solely on LCA opportunities for your children to serve but to find ways through your church or other organizations to serve as a family. It is a powerful thing for a child to see their parents serving others. It models for them what it means to serve faithfully, knowing that in doing so, we point others to Christ and reflect His love to the world.
May we always remember: faithful service glorifies a faithful God.
