Cheri and I welcomed a new pet to our home last spring. A mini Golden-doodle we named Leia Rea (we got her on May the “4th” be with you). Every morning, as I am preparing her bowl of food on the kitchen island, Leia Rea begins to “march” circles around the island very fast in anticipation of getting her food. We have named it the “Jericho March.” She wants the “wall” to come down so she can have her food ASAP. We laugh about it but I am reminded of the historical account in scripture where the nation of Israel marched around the great walls of the city of Jericho. God instructed them to do so and they responded in obedience. The great obstacle to their victory crumbled and God delivered on His promise.
As we celebrate the 25th anniversary of Legacy Christian Academy, I find myself reflecting on the many ways God has guided and blessed us over the years. In the Battle of Jericho as recorded in Joshua 6:1-27, we see how God’s promises and power lead to an improbable victory, and how His faithfulness is always evident, even in the face of overwhelming challenges. Let’s consider the parallels for a moment.
Entering the Promised Land
After years of wandering in the wilderness, the Israelites finally stood on the threshold of Canaan, the land God had promised them long ago. Under the leadership of Joshua, they were poised to take possession of this Promised Land. But standing in their way was the fortified city of Jericho—a symbol of opposition, a seemingly insurmountable obstacle.
At Legacy Christian Academy, we, too, can identify with this moment. Twenty-five years ago, when our school was just a dream and operated in rented facilities, there were challenges and uncertainties ahead of us, much like Jericho. How would we secure the resources like the land we currently own? How would we build a school that not only educates but nurtures a Christ-centered community? The odds seemed stacked against us, and the path forward wasn’t always clear. Many figurative walls stood in our way.
Jericho’s Fortifications
Jericho was known for its massive walls—impenetrable and intimidating to any who approached. In human terms, it seemed impossible to defeat. Yet, God had brought the Israelites this far, and they trusted in His power and promise. For Joshua and his people, Jericho wasn’t just a military challenge; it was a test of faith.
Looking back, the challenges that Legacy Christian Academy has faced over the past 25 years sometimes felt like our own “walls of Jericho.” Whether it was the challenge of acquiring land, building facilities, maintaining high academic standards, remaining open during Covid, or creating a spiritually enriching environment for our students, we’ve faced obstacles that seemed too great for us to overcome on our own. Yet, just as with Jericho, God has shown us time and again that His power is greater than any challenge we face.
God’s Instructions
God gave Joshua and the Israelites specific and unusual instructions for how to take Jericho. They were to march around the city once a day for six days, and on the seventh day, they were to march around it seven times while the priests blew their trumpets. When they obeyed God’s command, the walls of Jericho miraculously fell, and the city was delivered into their hands.
This story is a powerful reminder that God’s ways are not our ways.
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9 [ESV]
His plans may not always make sense to us, but His instructions are always perfect. As a school, we have often found ourselves stepping forward in faith, trusting God to guide us through situations that seemed uncertain or impossible. Whether it was expanding our facilities, launching new programs, or supporting families and students in need, we have seen that when we seek God’s guidance and obey His direction, He leads us to success in ways we could never have imagined.
God’s Faithfulness
The conquest of Jericho is ultimately a story of God’s faithfulness. Despite the odds, God fulfilled His promise to give the Israelites the land He had promised their ancestors. This improbable victory was not because of Israel’s strength or strategy, but because of God’s power and faithfulness to His word. He delivered Jericho into their hands, just as He said He would.
In the same way, the victories we have experienced at Legacy Christian Academy over the past 25 years are not solely the result of our hard work or planning—though those things matter. More importantly, they are a testament to God’s faithfulness. From the very beginning, God has been with us, guiding every step, opening doors, closing doors, and providing the resources and people we’ve needed. Just like Jericho, many of our victories have come against significant odds, reminding us that it is God’s power at work, not our own.
Our School’s Story: A Testament to God's Faithfulness
As we celebrate this milestone, we recognize that our school’s journey has been marked by God’s faithful provision. We’ve experienced growth beyond what we could have anticipated, and we’ve seen lives transformed through the work God is doing here. From the founding of the school to the achievements of our students and faculty, every success we’ve had can be traced back to the faithfulness of God. He has led us through seasons of uncertainty, provided for us in times of need, and blessed us in ways we never expected.
As we look ahead to the next 25 years, we do so with confidence—not because we have all the answers, but because we serve a God who is faithful to His promises. Just as He brought down the walls of Jericho, He will continue to lead and sustain Legacy Christian Academy as we remain faithful to Him.
Thank you for being part of this incredible journey. As we celebrate this milestone, let us give thanks for God’s faithfulness, remembering that every victory, every achievement, and every blessing comes from His hand. Together, we will continue to trust in Him as He leads us forward into the future, confident that His faithfulness will endure for generations to come.
He is faithful,
