The Varsity Boys team is looking strong for this coming season. We have a strong contingent returning from last year, led by team captain David May and seniors Andrew Slattery, Hughston Lee, Michael Crock, and Jordan Orlando. Along with these seniors returning are juniors Josiah Gill and Max Sanderlin and sophomores Trenton Balcombe, Benji Brewer, Sam Harkins, and Jonathan Darrell. I am also excited about those joining the team, senior Cade King,  junior James Lee, sophomores Matthew Lindsey and Rohnan Mech. The freshman class this year is strong and is already contributing in goal scoring. Our freshmen are Danial Cobb, Jake Long, Minas Manias, and Gavin Pickerill.

Our first match was with The Highlands School. We got off to a slow start and got down 3 to 1. The players remained focused and stepped it up in the second half scoring 5 goals to win the match 6 – 3.  Standouts were Josiah Gill with a hat-trick of 3 goals and Andrew Slattery in the goal with 11 saves. The team had a strong passing game of 152 passes, with 6 goals on 10 shots. Freshman Jake Long provided a premier goal from 30 yards with a left-foot shot bending into the upper corner. Others scoring were Michael Crock and James Lee.

Our second match was with Prince of Peace ending in a 2 – 2 tie. It was a strong showing by all. Great defensive play by Hughston Lee and Max Sanderlin who worked hard to keep the speed of their forwards under control. David May provided great control and transition into the attack. In his first match of the season, freshman Gavin Pickerill scored the equalizer through sheer tenacity and strong play. David May scored an on-goal from a free-kick 30 yards out. The players are coming together and we are showing real skill and stronger control, strategic passing, and creating opportunities in the attacking third.

It is going to be a great season for Boys Varsity Soccer.
