Head of School's Blog: Scatter-Shooting pt. 2
Scatter-shooting, while wondering whatever happened to school choice.
It appears that all proposed legislation that would allow some form of school choice is dead in this session of the Texas legislature. That is disappointing to me because my beloved State of Texas is behind the curve on educational innovation and school reform. I’m reminded of the definition of insanity: “Doing the same things in the same way and expecting a different result.” Oh well, perhaps I’ll see some form of school choice in my lifetime.
There is some good news for private schools coming out of this legislative session. First, both houses of the legislature have passed a bill to allow private schools to carry a supply of epi-pens to be used in case of a life-threatening allergic reaction. The bill is headed toward the governor’s desk for his signature. Previously, private schools were subject to lawsuits if they administered an epi-pen without a prescription. This new law now gives private schools the same rights as public schools. Secondly, prospects are good for a bill that would allow private schools to access training for school marshals. Again, this bill simply gives private schools the same rights as public schools. I am happy that our state legislators are beginning to acknowledge the important role that private schools play in our state and afford those schools the same rights and privileges that public schools enjoy.
I am so proud of the Legacy community for raising over $35,000 for the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital! As you know, our “Laps for Legacy” fun run changed its focus from raising money for the school to a charitable cause of helping another worthy endeavor, in this case, children who suffer from physical or learning disabilities. Thank you, students, teachers, and parents, for responding so generously to this cause. And a huge thank-you goes to Lisa Liberis and Michelle Taunton for their tireless work in organizing this event! It is essential that we teach and reinforce the Christian principle of “the grace of giving” as described by the Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians, chapter 8. I believe our “Laps of Love” event helped us teach that principle well. Scroll to the bottom of this email for more information on the Laps of Love event!
Speaking of the grace of giving, I am so pleased with the success of this year’s T.J. Tomeny Golf Tournament held at the Gentle Creek Country Club on May 1. 84 golfers participated in the event with many more people participating in the on-line auction. Ultimately, we raised almost $35,000 for tuition assistance to benefit families who could not otherwise afford a Legacy education for their children. What a generous community we have at Legacy!
And here’s more good news. Our inaugural Annual Fund is a smashing success with more families participating and more funds raised than ever before. The money raised in the Annual Fund directly benefits our students, teachers, and programs. You will soon receive an Annual Fund Update from the Development Office that shows how much has been donated to date and identifies all the different projects that have been or are being funded by the Annual Fund.
Once again, thank you for your generous giving that allows us to enhance and strengthen the mission of Legacy Christian Academy.
Finally, as I complete my first year of service as head of school, I can emphatically and enthusiastically say that Janna and I could not be happier with our decision to come to Legacy. Time after time, God has confirmed our call to join this exceptional community. We look forward to many more years working alongside our outstanding faculty, staff, and parent body to fulfill our school’s mission of “equipping strong leaders with Biblical convictions for tomorrow.”
